Fire Rated Aluminium Spandrel Panels

Fire performance requirements for external wall systems vary depending on factors such as the building’s use, height and construction. Approved Document B sets out the circumstances in which materials used within external walls should achieve an A1 or A2-s1, d0 reaction-to-fire classification.

Finish Facades’ aluminium insulated spandrel panels are tested to BS EN 13501-1 and are available with A1 or A2-s1, d0 classifications, depending on the panel specification and finish.

The panels have also been tested to CWCT standards for impact and wind resistance, helping to demonstrate their performance as part of the wider facade system.

What is a fire rated spandrel panel?

A fire rated spandrel panel is used within a curtain walling or facade system to conceal structural elements between floors while providing a specified reaction-to-fire classification. Finish Facades’ FINSPAN aluminium insulated spandrel panels are available with A1 or A2-s1, d0 classifications to BS EN 13501-1, depending on the panel specification and finish.

What do the A1 and A2-s1, d0 fire classifications mean?

Under BS EN 13501-1, A1 is the highest reaction-to-fire classification and identifies a product as non-combustible. A2-s1, d0 indicates limited combustibility, with very limited smoke production and no flaming droplets or particles. The correct specification should be selected according to the building type, height and applicable fire-safety requirements.

Are FINSPAN panels suitable for fire remediation projects?

Yes. FINSPAN fire rated spandrel panels can be specified for both new-build developments and facade remediation projects. Each panel is manufactured to suit the project requirements, helping replace unsuitable existing materials while maintaining the required appearance, insulation and weather performance. The suitability of the complete external wall build-up should always be assessed for the individual project.

Are aluminium spandrel panels tested for fire performance?

FINSPAN aluminium spandrel panels are tested and classified to BS EN 13501-1 through UKAS-accredited testing facilities. Depending on the panel construction and finish, the range includes A1 and A2-s1, d0 options. Project-specific classification and test documentation should be reviewed during specification.

Do fire rated spandrel panels also provide insulation?

FINSPAN aluminium insulated spandrel panels combine the external aluminium facing with an insulated panel construction. This helps conceal floor slabs and other structural elements while supporting the thermal performance and visual continuity of the curtain walling system. Panel depths are available from 20mm to 200mm to meet different project requirements.
